Gangsters Lived Here?

We were in the Kimball, South Dakota area doing more research on the early life of Verne Miller (The notorious gangster involved in the Kansas City Massacre) and were tipped by a local resident that in the 1930s a farm northeast of town was a hideout for “famous” criminals.

Names like “Baby Face Nelson” were mentioned. That claim might be a bit exaggerated, but the basic legend may be accurate. Our source seemed reliable and sincere and said that his mother attended country school from time to time with the children of these guys. (They must have felt fairly secure; one wouldn’t have wives and children along if a sheriff’s raid was anticipated. Local collusion? Remember, Verne Miller’s uncle was Brule County sheriff in those days.) We found the farm and intend to research this wonderful tale a bit more.
