Conde South Dakota Nicknames

What is it about Conde, South Dakota and that peculiar tradition of nicknames? At one time it seemed like half of the town’s male population was addressed by nicknames? Conde must of had the highest per- capita rate of nickname use in the State.

For example: Heavy, Fat, Red, Sleepy, Stub, and Fuzzy. And there was Pancake , Shad, Duke, Swanse, Bones, Sqeeck ,and Stincky. And there was Garlic! And many more.

Now, these were not names used behind their backs; these were the names that they went by on a day- to- day basis. When “Garlic” was addressed as “Garlic,” he was not offended. That was his name!

It seems like that the males born in the 20s and 30s were the most likely to be given these monikers. Mainstreet moments believes that everything has a history. What is the history of this Conde tradition, we wonder?

The tradition carried on to the next generation also. I remember a Kraut and Babe.

We also had "Pic" and the Lofthouse girls, "Butch" and "Slug". We used to call pancake, "tub-a-guts".
