True Minnesota fishermen know that Pine River is a fisherman’s delight! Here you can fish for walleye and norther pike which begins in mid-May with the large and small mouth bass beginning just a few weeks later. If you are a Muskie fisherman then the beginning of June is the time you will want to visit the community and test out the waters of the numerous lakes that are in the area. Pan fish and perch are legal to catch all year long so don’t miss out on this delicacy!
If you are not familiar with the lakes and want to hire a guide there are many available to take you out for a half or whole day of enjoyment and success. Lakes in the area include: Ada, Boot, Clam, Hattie, Horseshoe, Jail, Lizzie, Norway, Swede, Woman, Leech and Winnie and Whitefish. With this many lakes available for your enjoyment you will certainly not only catch the fish you want but will enjoy nature with your family when you aren’t on the lake.
While you are in town you may want to get your picture taken standing beside Paul Bunyan’s Baby Boots or sitting on the back of “Babe the Green Recycling Ox.” This unique addition to the area exhibits green and sustainable living themes with all kind of different promotions showcasing locally grown fruits and vegetables along with other green information. This is located at the Pine River Information Center.
Back to fishing, if you are looking for great fishing weather you will want to get to the lakes area when the weather has started to cool down and the lake gets to the 50 degree area, fishing is great and the walleye are waiting for you to come!
Pine River is also the northwestern most community along the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway. You can pick up a map at the Information Center (while seeing the Green Ox) and learn of the history of the byway as well as points of interest. You can enjoy the byway either in your car, on foot or bike. It is a great way to get to see the beauty of northern Minnesota.
Stop in and see the newly moved Pine River Railroad Depot which sits just across the tracks from where it stood in the late 1800?s. You will also get to see a red caboose which as been added to the site.
Pine River has a number of local activities for you to enjoy when you are vacationing in the area. In the fall you won’t want to miss the Annual Lutefisk Dinner put on by the 1st Lutheran Church….don’t like lutefisk? Then enjoy the Swedish meatballs and lefse along with everything else.
During the summer there is always something going on for you to enjoy so come on up to Pine River for a vacation of a lifetime!
