The Crazy Horse Memorial is an enormous sculpture located in the mountains known as the Black Hills in South Dakota. By car, travel US Highway 16/385 just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore ( See the map link below )
Henry Standing Bear and other Lakota Chiefs approached Korczak Ziółkowski, who had previouisly worked on the Mount Rushmore project to build a monument. The project is still in progress and its goal is to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians.
Work officially began on June 3rd, 1948.
The Crazy Horse memorial is much larger than the Mount Rushmore momument. Once completed it will be over 560 feet high by 641 feet long. It is said that the portion of the carving forming Crazy Horse's head will be larger than the combined presidents' heads at Mount Rushmore.
Where the crazy horse monument shines the most is in regard to its funding. The memorial is a nonprofit undertaking and it receives no state or federal funding. The project declined two 10 million dollar donations from the federal government in order to avoid federal involvement.
