On September 22 of 1912, the hospital opened its doors to the poor and the sick of Madison, Wisconsin.
About the Position:
The Director of Development is part of the executive management team of St. Mary?s Foundation and plays a significant role in the management of the organization. Director of Development is responsible for developing and implementing a broad range of strategic fundraising activities for identifying, cultivating, and procuring funds for St. Mary?s Hospital and St. Mary?s Care Center. Reporting to the Executive Director of St. Mary?s Foundation, the position will support the strategic vision of the Foundation through the development, management and coordination for all fundraising efforts in alignment with the Foundation?s strategic plan and will increase the organization's support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other sources.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide significant role in the Foundation?s annual and strategic planning processes.
Work with the Executive Director, development team, and hospital staff to align specific fundraising strategies with St. Mary?s strategic priorities.
Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to ensure that the organization meets its annual and long-term financial goals.
Regularly assess effectiveness of the fundraising plan to ensure that the organization meets its annual and long-term financial goals.
Regularly assess effectiveness of the fundraising plan, develop and implement creative vision for improvement, and keep an eye to future possibilities for expansion.
Ensure that internal planning, communication, and reporting systems are in place to effectively engage St. Mary?s President, Executive Director, development team, and Hospital/Care Center staff in an implementation of the fundraising plan.
Work with the Executive Director and the Board to cultivate and maintain strong personal relationships with the philanthropic community, individual and corporate donors, sponsors, board members and volunteers.
Conduct prospect research, follow up on major leads after initial contact, and create new strategic engagement opportunities for growing and diversifying the base of existing individual, corporate and foundation donors.
Oversee the development and implementation of consistent and strategic messaging throughout all Foundation written correspondence, including proposals, reports, newsletters and other St. Mary?s communication tools.
Provide final edits to all written products created by the Foundation, and write and edit proposals, reports appeals, stewardship reports, and other fundraising related materials, when needed.
Ensure that all grant deadlines are met, including proposals, reports, and funder correspondence.
Assess St. Mary?s Foundation current individual donor strategies and work with Executive Director, St. Mary?s Foundation Board, and staff, to identify and implement long-term goals and strategies for building a more robust and comprehensive individual donor program.
Develop strategies for identifying, cultivating, and managing major and planned gifts.
Work with Foundation team to align Employee Caring Campaign and annual appeals to the individual donor strategies.
Independently perform prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship with emphasis on prospects capable of gifts of $10,000 or more.
Build a portfolio of fundraising prospects and strategically manage relationships through face-to-face visits to bring major gift solicitation to closure.
Meet annual solicitation, cultivation and stewardship goals. Work with stewardship team to ensure that all donors are appropriately thanked and receive regular communication by making donor stewardship a priority.
Play a leadership role in implementing fundraising events and strategies that connect the interests of individual and corporate donors to specific St. Mary?s programs.
Ensure the confidentiality and integrity of donor records.
Manage strategic gifts budget and prepare regular revenue reports.
Professional Experience/ Skills:
A Bachelor?s degree of Master?s Degree and at least ten (10) years? experience in nonprofit, higher education and/or hospital fundraising.
Demonstrated ability to solicit and secure major gifts for individual donors and to build a comprehensive and individual donor program. Experience and proven ability to cultivate relationships and work effectively with donors.
Experience and proven ability to think strategically, plan effectively, and manage productively to achieve multiple high-priority goals.
Business acumen and the ability to work collaboratively and as a team player.
Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills, effective time management and organizational skills are essential for success in this position.
Experience in successfully leveraging volunteer, staff and board relationships to secure gifts. Experience in engaging board and staff in fundraising.
Experience and demonstrated ability in securing foundation and other institutional grants, including conducting prospect research, cultivation, and writing grant proposals that match St. Mary?s programs with funder interests.
Experience with a donor database program is required; familiarity with Raisers Edge a plus.
Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of St. Mary?s mission and vision. Experience working within a hospital or clinical setting is a plus.
Ability and willingness to travel. A valid driver?s license, vehicle and good driving record are essential.
Job will involve local and regional travel.
Job with require evening and weekend activities.
Position will work closely with the Executive Director therefore, building trust and chemistry is critical.
